utah mtn kingsnakes, males wrestling, North Snake Range

early May 07, utah mountain kingsnakes (Lampropeltis pyromelana infralabialis), two adult males wrestling, as found, North Snake Range, White Pine Co, NV

It was special to encounter two adult males together.  They were almost identical in size, which might have helped extend the duration of their wrestling.  I found these while participating in an annual mountain kingsnake survey in Nevada, organized by the National Park Service.  This was in a canyon that holds at least five different lizard species: Uta stansburiana, Sceloporus occidentalis, Sceloporus graciosus, Plestiodon skiltonianus and Crotaphytus bicintores.

utah mtn kingsnakes, the 2 males, North Snake Range

great basin gophersnake, subadult, Confusion Mtns

mid May 07, great basin gophersnake (Pituophis catenifer deserticola), subadult along dirt road, NE Confusion Mtns, Millard Co, UT

Sometimes when gophersnakes or ratsnakes rest in an exposed place, they arranged their body in this stretched-out but wobbled fashion.  I think kingsnakes are less prone to position their body in this way, although they are probably also less likely to rest motionless in an exposed place.

I found this specimen moving slowly between two boulders.

smooth greensnake, curlleaf mahogany, Wasatch Mtns

early June 07, smooth greensnake (Opheodrys vernalis), large adult, placed up in curlleaf mahogany, Wasatch Mtns, Salt Lake Co, UT

I have found six smooth greensnakes in the Wasatch Mtns, between 2001 – 2009.  The four found in 2006-2007 were under rocks, and the ones in 2001 and 2009 were moving on the surface in areas with plentiful cover.

striped whipsnake, subadult, House Range

mid June 07, striped whipsnake (Masticophis taeniatus), subadult, House Range, Millard Co, UT

*

striped whipsnake, adult, snakeweed, House Range

early Sept 07, striped whipsnake (Masticophis taeniatus), adult, trying to hide behind broom snakeweed, House Range, Millard Co, UT

This specimen was on the dirt road, and I saw it moving as my vehicle approached.  It watched me carefully and tried to keep small shrubs between me and it.
